Week 34: Lauren Wolman
PhD Candidate

Please tell us a little bit about yourself.

I have been involved in rugby development in Canada and the U.K. for over 25 years. Currently, I am Girls Director of the Toronto Nomads RFC and I am a PhD Candidate at York University, Toronto Canada in Sport Psychology/Sociology, focusing on sport development pathways for children and youth. I also own Up & Under Consulting, a firm which supports sport for development programming, aimed at increasing sport and physical activity participation amongst under-represented groups in Canada.

What qualities in a teammate for sport or work do you look for? Why?

I love sport environments that are inclusive and that place the athlete’s personal development over their performance.

Some qualities I look for in teammates are dedication, empathy, humour, and passion.

Who is a leader you admire and why?

Serena Williams is one of the most aspiring athletes. Not only is she respectfully one of the best athletes in the world, she has shifted the discourse around the female athlete.

What is one piece of advice would you have for young female athletes today?

I challenge every athlete to give back to the sport that has given you so much. So many of us walk away after our playing years are done. Inspire the next generation. Be the change. Every little bit helps.
