WEEK #13: TIYA B.

Please tell us a little bit about yourself.

I am Tiya Bainbrige and I am 11 years old. I play for the Whitby Wolves hockey association. Sports that I have played are hockey, lacrosse, soccer, badminton, track and field, ball hockey, volleyball, and taekwondo. Some of my general interests are art, sports, crafts, playing with my dog Kelly, going for walks and hikes, playing with friends, spending time with family, fundraising for my campaign #Tiyaspurpose and math. My passion is hockey because I get to meet new people, do the things I love- compete and skate, develop my teamwork skills, skating, shooting and building bonds with people that I might know for the rest of my life. Some of my proudest accomplishments are: raising over $38,000 for charity, beating cancer and being the first generation of kids to do online schooling.

What sparked your passion for sport?

How can it be shared with others? What sparked my passion for hockey was my competitive edge. I saw my twin brother Teagan playing hockey. He is really good and I thought to myself, I can do that. After that, my parents put me in hockey. It was love at first skate. Love for sport can be shared by raising awareness of how it can teach discipline, sportsmanship and learning to lose with grace by dusting yourself and getting right back in to win.

What is a goal you have achieved you are proud of? How did you achieve your goal?

My goal was making rep hockey. I did this by practicing, having a positive attitude and trying my best. Other goals are beating cancer and raising awareness and fundraising for #TiyasPurpose.

What advice do you have for parents, coaches or sport administrators to improve inclusion in sport?

Some advice for coaches etc. is ensuring comradery and friendships develop within the team.  Team building and get-togethers for any kind of sport team can help foster tighter bonds and relationships and when that happens teams play better together.
